Geocaching: Exploring Places Through Play

 Discovering places, stories and communities

Geocaching is a modern-day treasure hunt that combines technology, exploration and curiosity. Using GPS coordinates and a dedicated app, people can search for small containers, known as geocaches or simply caches, hidden in cities, parks, natural areas and places of interest.

Once participants reach the location indicated by the coordinates, the real search begins: they need to observe their surroundings, follow clues and try to locate the cache. Inside, there is usually a logbook, where those who find the container can leave their signature before carefully returning it to exactly the place where they found it. The discovery can also be recorded online, allowing participants to become part of an international community of people who share a passion for exploration.

But Geocaching is much more than a treasure hunt. It is above all a different way of experiencing and discovering places. Following the coordinates can lead people to corners of their own city they may never have noticed before, introduce them to meaningful places, encourage greater awareness of their surroundings and inspire them to explore with curiosity.

It is precisely this dimension of Geocaching that attracted the interest of IAM – Intersectionalities and more APS, which has chosen this activity as a tool for discovering and highlighting different areas of Bologna.

 The Arboreto Cache in Pilastro

In the Pilastro area, IAM has placed a cache in the Arboreto Park, a particularly significant site from both an environmental and naturalistic perspective.

The Arboreto covers approximately ten hectares of land that was once used for agricultural purposes and includes the historic rural settlement of San Paolo. Created in 1996, the park is characterised by a remarkable variety of plant life: meadows, hedgerows and wooded areas are home to numerous species of trees and shrubs, including native varieties as well as less common species.

Placing a cache in this setting invites participants to slow down, observe and experience the park from a different perspective. The search becomes an opportunity to discover a green heritage that is perhaps less well known, yet one that bears witness to the history and transformation of this part of the city.

The Arboreto cache therefore represents a small meeting point between nature, technology and place: an invitation to step beyond the most familiar routes and allow curiosity to lead the way.

Play to learn, learn to connect.

A Multicache to Discover Pilastro

Also in the Pilastro area, IAM has created a multicache, a particular type of Geocaching experience in which the search does not end at a single location.

In this case, the route takes participants through several stages. In order to reach the final destination, they need to observe what they encounter along the way, collect information and gradually solve a series of clues.

The multicache thus becomes a genuine journey of exploration through the local area. It is not simply about finding a hidden container, but about moving through the neighbourhood while paying attention to its spaces, its history, its transformations and the traces of everyday life.

Pilastro, which emerged from the 1960s onwards as a large residential neighbourhood, is today characterised by a strong presence of associations and numerous initiatives promoting participation and social interaction. Exploring the area through Geocaching offers an opportunity to connect places and people and to look at the neighbourhood from a curious and unconventional perspective.

A Cache at Piazza dei Colori

IAM’s Geocaching experience has also extended to Piazza dei Colori, in the Croce del Biacco area of Bologna.

For those encountering it for the first time, Piazza dei Colori may appear to be little more than a tree-lined avenue leading from Via Mattei into a residential area. Yet behind its distinctive layout lies a space that has become an important place for meeting, social interaction and community initiatives over the years.

The square hosts festivals, markets, cultural activities, social gatherings and intercultural initiatives, developed thanks to the presence and commitment of local associations and community organisations. It is a place where everyday residential life meets participation, social engagement and community life.

Here too, the cache becomes an invitation to pause, look around and discover a place from a different perspective. Those who arrive in search of the hidden container find more than just a cache: they encounter a story, a lived-in space and a part of the city that deserves to be discovered and appreciated.

Through these Geocaching experiences, our organization offers a simple and engaging way to connect with and explore local communities and places.

A GPS coordinate can become the starting point for a walk. A cache can become the beginning of a story waiting to be discovered. A route can become an opportunity to encounter places, people and memories that are part of the city.

Because discovering a place also means learning to see it through new eyes.
